Australia.

An article in Australia's LAN Magazine June 98 issue reveals some amazing intrigue concerning
Australia's crypto export regulations. Officials from the Department of Defence who are responsible
for administering export licenses have spoken publicly for the first time. Unfortunately what they
have to say is bad news for Australia's crypto developers, in particular Eric Young and Tim Hudson,
the people behind SSLeay <www.cryptsoft.com> and Cryptozilla <www.cryptozilla.org>. Much of their
work has been done at no commercial gain yet they are now under the scrutiny of officialdom for
making their software freely available on an Australian website, even though it seems very unlikely
that they have infringed current laws. Australian export controls are administered through the
Customs Act, which refers to physical goods and export via ships and aircraft. The legislation has
yet to catch up with the information age. Suggestions have even been made that the Weapons of Mass
Destruction Act might be an appropriate avenue for prosecution! Oh to have that on one's CV <g>.

Anonymous has now posted the two main articles to John Young's website, so that the rest of the
world can see that Australia is not immune from crypto-stupidity: http://jya.com/oz-crypto.htm
