ActivMedia has released findings from its fifth annual 'Real
Numbers Behind Net Profits' study of Electronic Commerce by
seventeen industry sectors.
Results from the findings show there are high expectations
for growth from executives across all business sectors, with
anticipated revenue growth of 63 percent in 1998, slightly
higher than the 58 percent growth actually experienced in
1997.
Sectors poised for fastest growth in 1998 include 1)
computer hardware and software, 2) real estate, 3)
publishing & information services, 4) finance and 5)
Internet services. All are expected to demonstrate growth
rates of 150 percent over 1997 figures.
Annual revenue growth of 100 - 149 percent is projected by
managers in business-to-business services, telco &
broadcast, travel and in the
distribution/transportation/wholesale sectors. Modest growth
expectations of 50 - 99 percent over 1997 revenues are
anticipated in business-to-business products, consumer
products, consumer services (other than travel, real estate
and information), Internet services and Internet mall &
transaction sites.
ActivMedia's Vice President of Market Research Harold
Wolhandler sees Ecommerce initiatives in the
business-to-business sector rapidly expanding. "Only 28
percent of B-to-B websites reported online sales activity
while just over half of consumer-oriented websites sell
directly. This trend is expected to shift dramatically over
the next 12 to 24 months now that businesses understand the
cost savings of Ecommerce and also better understand the
scope of integrating online transactions with their current
legacy systems."
Of sites that generated revenue from the Web, the average
total for 1997 was a little over USD100K. Three in ten
generated revenues under USD1K and one in five has revenues
between USD1k and USD10k. The real difference in revenue
generation is at the high-end - only one in a hundred B-to-B
online businesses generated revenues above USD1M.
