Und zwar morgen: dringliche Anfrage und Antrag auf einen
Untersuchungsausschuss. Mehr davon morgen.

The European Parliament is expected to widen its
investigation into claims of espionage made in last week's
controversial Echelon report. The European Union's executive
Commission and national authorities will open testimony on
the issue Thursday in Brussels, Belgium.

``This is the first time so much information has been gathered
on Echelon while both the British and American governments
continue to deny such surveillance systems,'' said Yaman
Akdeniz of the British Cyber-Rights and Cyber-Liberties
group. ``The genie is now out of the bottle.

``These systems are more surveillant of society, like
something out of George Orwell's `1984.' This is happening in
our democratic societies,'' Akdeniz said.
...

``We have to ask ourselves what the security threats are,''
Robert Evans, vice-chairman of the European Parliament's
Committee on Citizen's Freedoms and Rights. ``We are not
in an era of massive secrecy any more,'' since the Cold War
is over. ``We would like to hear answers from governments.''

The U.S. National Security Agency, which is believed to head
Echelon, sent a letter Feb. 24 to Congress saying it could
``neither confirm nor deny the existence of specific
operations.''

``However we can tell you that NSA operates in strict
accordance with U.S. laws and regulations in protecting the
privacy rights of U.S. persons,'' the NSA letter said.

...
``More needs to be done to establish the scope and impact
of unlawful monitoring,'' said Marc Rotenberg of the Electronic
Privacy Information Center in Washington
